Sub-Metering & Digital Meter Upgrades

As a Western Power Authorised Contractor, Weekend Electrical carries out approved meter replacement work, including the replacement of older meters with modern digital meters. Many new digital meters use remote communications technology, allowing meter data to be transmitted without requiring a person to attend the property simply to obtain a reading.

For Western Power meter replacement programs, the properties and customers allocated for meter upgrades are determined by Western Power. Weekend Electrical does not select, influence or prioritise which customers are included in those programs.

Private sub-metering is different. In many commercial properties, including medical centres and healthcare complexes, several tenants or businesses may share a building supplied through a single main electricity meter. Individual tenants may nevertheless want their electricity consumption measured separately so that each business can be charged according to its own usage.

Traditionally, this has been achieved using sub-meters that require the building owner, manager or contractor to physically read each meter and prepare separate usage calculations. Modern digital sub-metering systems can simplify this process by providing remote or automated meter readings, reducing the need for regular on-site meter-reading visits and making consumption monitoring easier for property managers and tenants.

Installing or upgrading sub-metering can require access to the building’s main electrical distribution system and, depending on the design, may require a planned power shutdown. For a medical centre or busy commercial property, carrying out this work during normal operating hours can interrupt computers, medical equipment, refrigeration, lighting, communications and normal business activities.

Weekend Electrical can organise major sub-metering installations and associated shutdowns over a weekend, allowing the work to be completed while the facility is quieter or closed. This can significantly reduce disruption to tenants, staff and patients and allows the electrical system to be returned to normal operation before the working week begins.

Accurate Energy Monitoring

Sub meters can help building owners, facility managers and tenants understand how electricity is being used in different parts of a site. This information may assist with energy management, cost allocation, maintenance planning and identifying unusual changes in consumption.

Sub-Metering Applications

  • Individual medical or consulting suites
  • Separate commercial tenancies
  • Departments and common areas
  • Air-conditioning and major equipment circuits
  • New developments and building alterations
  • Energy monitoring and usage reporting

Installation and Upgrades

We can assess existing electrical distribution arrangements and help determine practical locations for sub meters and associated equipment. Work can be coordinated with site operations to minimise disruption to patients, staff, tenants and customers.

Sub-metering systems should be designed and installed by appropriately licensed electrical contractors and coordinated with the site’s electrical protection, isolation and metering requirements.

Planned Work With Minimal Disruption

Where practical, sub-metering installations and upgrades can be scheduled during evenings or weekends. Weekend Electrical can assist with planned electrical work for medical centres, commercial properties and other facilities in Perth.
