Thermal Scanning

Thermal Imaging of Electrical Switchboards

Thermal imaging of electrical switchboards is an important part of preventative electrical maintenance and is frequently requested by commercial insurers as part of risk management, policy renewal or ongoing insurance requirements. Using infrared thermography while the electrical system is operating under normal load allows abnormal temperature patterns to be identified without interrupting normal operations.

A thermal scan can help identify developing problems such as loose or high-resistance connections, overloaded circuits, unbalanced loads, deteriorating breakers and components, and unusual changes in heat generation within the electrical distribution system. Identifying these changes early provides an opportunity to investigate and rectify faults before they develop into equipment failure, power interruption or an electrical fire.

This preventative approach is particularly important in healthcare environments, where electrical reliability affects not only business continuity but also the safety and care of patients. Class 9a healthcare buildings can include hospitals, day surgeries, procedure units and other facilities where patients may require assistance during an emergency. In these environments, an electrical failure can affect lighting, medical equipment, refrigeration, communications and other essential services at a time when vulnerable patients may be present.

Weekend Electrical can incorporate thermal switchboard scanning into planned preventative maintenance, allowing potential electrical problems to be identified and documented before they result in an unexpected shutdown. Where abnormalities are found, the thermal images and electrical findings can be used to prioritise further investigation, repairs and ongoing monitoring.
